Kreuzer heroics earns rising star nomination

The United States is one of a growing number countries around the world that now recognize the existence of biological gender dysphoria.

"Kreuzer's case was exceptional and worthy of recognition by the World Medical Association," said Dr. Christopher M. Stoffregen, acting chair of the association's psychiatry committee and professor of psychiatry at the Mayo Clinic.

"He certainly deserved our recognition."

Kreuzer, 38, was diagnosed as male at birth at age 1 by his mother and was born female on Aug. 7, 2002.

But after he began taking testosterone and began to grow facial hair, the boy decided to take hormones to become a girl.

This was enough to trigger his own identity crisis.

Now that transition to female has led Kreuzer, now 18, to receive his bachelor's degree in social work and serve as a youth activist at a transgender youth center for transgender teens.

After his transition, the boy became active in the trans community, wearing the girl's clothes and attending youth groups in his neighborhood.

"After years of being bullied at school, I was in this very vulnerable moment," Kreuzer said. "I thought of myself as male and thought, 'If I ever grow out of that, I'm going to look like a girl.' "

Kreuzer had begun the treatment after he became physically insecure about his own appearance. He was reluctant to take part in hormone therapy or surgery because he thought it would diminish his looks and femininity.

Kreuzer, who was living with his mother after being adopted, first sought the medical professional who specialized in gender dysphoria, Dr. Richard Landau, who specializes in developmental and sexual disability issues.

"It was about two years between me and having my diagnosis," Kreuzer said. "I was in a really dark place. At the time, I didn't feel safe."

He had a doctor's appointment several times over the next six years to discuss the treatment. Finally, Landau began asking Kreuzer questions, like: What's the name of my first name? What's my birth year? How did my mom pronounce my first name?

Landau told Kreuzer he'd heard about the work. He told him about what he'd heard about the treatment and suggested Kreuzer take more time and seek advice.

"You've got a really strong body and you've got a beautiful mind. Now you're taking it like it's a step forward," Landau said. "I didn't know where to start."

Burke says carpenter expressed gratitude for a job done in his life, though he was concerned about losing work because he was working for the company that hired him.

"I asked him, 'Do you love it?' He said, 'I love it. I would like a little bit of money too.' I told him I was a retired woman and I don't want my money going towards someone else's retirement,'" she said.

Burke's carpenter friend gave her $100 to help cover the cost of her funeral. She says she would have stayed at a friend's house had she known that.

Kurwak told us in an email that the company's policy is to allow employees the right to request benefits, including food, shelter, and medical care during an emergency in exchange for not being paid for three months. "We do have certain benefits that we can ask an employee to contribute toward," he wrote. "As you know, this is done because we have to pay for a certain amount of time. This option is limited to emergency room care due to unforeseen circumstances and is not part of the normal day-to-day business model."
